Obafemi’s scholarship is situated in the field of Comparative and International Education with a focus on the sub-field of global higher education policy studies. He examines the impact of globalization on the rise of higher education interventions aimed at universities in African countries.

His forthcoming dissertation is tentatively titled, Appropriating Excellence: A Comparative Case Study of Nigerian Universities and will contain case studies of institutions selected to participate in the World Bank funded Africa Centers of Excellence Project. Findings from this qualitative research are intended to inform policymakers and practitioners on gaps between policy and practice. The overall goal is to elicit alternative, context-specific approaches to achieving excellence in the 21st century.
